Boss and Russell Athletic made a pretty well-choreographed fashion team this season. The unisex capsule collection unites the expert, painstaking tailoring of the German brand with the instantly recognizable aesthetic of an American sportswear icon - Russell Athletic.
The collaboration resulted in bold designs inspired by attire for sportsmen, drawing on American basketball influences. Modern, unisex outfits were devised in a retro colour palette:
The premiere of the collection was celebrated with a basketball-inspired movie, featuring supermodels of various types of beauty, including Bella Hadid and Ashley Graham in their shared changing room. Soundtracked by House of Pain’s “Jump Around”, the launch of the Boss x Russell Athletic collection highlights the spirit of teamwork. The song can be heard during NBA matches - it’s a unique incentive for both the fans and the players.
The launch at New York's iconic Gotham hall was directed by an esteemed photographer Joshua Kissi. The campaign production was handed over to the established media company Highsnobiety, which started its operation in 2005... as a streetwear blog.
A diverse training session – Boss x Russell Athletic
Russell Athletic is an iconic sportswear brand (primarily focused on American football). The brand has invented a sweatshirt in 1926.
Collaborating with Boss, Russell Athletic introduces a fresh, laid-back chic into sportswear edit that cannot be associated with classic elegance.
The collection employs innovative, enhanced materials; practical yet resourceful solutions blend performance-related garment with Boss’ signature sartorial details. Among many, the collection features side panels on tailored, wide-legged sweatpants with an elasticated waistband as well as oversize sporty-looking trench coats in light colours. We will also find smart-casual blazers to go with T-shirts and loose-fitting trousers.
Engaging in the casualisation trend, Hugo Boss hired young talents to design the collection - no one had ever known the brand from this side before.
The second pillar of the collection are Russell Athletics’ signature elements:
and accessories, including beanies, baseball caps and bucket hats, popular in the 1990s and at the beginning of the 2000s.
The Boss x Russell Athletic team creates a fashion environment for the next generation. This partnership fuses the art of tailoring with the nostalgic storytelling of classic sportswear. That unusual commixture can be summarised by the words of Ricardo Aranda, Vice President of Russell Athletic:
“Innovation and reinvention are important to Russell Athletic and BOSS, and we’re really excited about what we’ve created together as a result. By finding inspiration in both brands’ archives and exploring the creativity inherent in tailoring and sportswear, we’ve made a collection that’s fit for a new generation.”
